Good fences make good astro-neighbors

As an erstwhile planetarium professional, I can now reveal that not only has the newly defined "bar" at the heart of our galaxy been suspected through indirect evidence for some time, it's also not merely a "bar." You see, since 1947 the population centers on the far side of galaxy have been aware of our progress, and have determined when we will probably achieve FTL interstellar travel, so they're building this great honkin' wall....

I never knew such bars existed until I saw the news story yesterday.

I think any alien civilization that believes we will ever achieve FTL travel is extremely optimistic. I think we're going in the other direction: in a hundred years we'll be arguing over which version of Genesis we should be teaching in biology classes, and the Mad Max films will seem like snapshots from a pastoral utopia.

Why, we may not even have biology classes -- like "close dancing" they can lead to Other Things.

"Hey, you two 'colliding' galaxies! Back off! I can't even fit a Bible between you two. Not even the Gideons'!"

Cool, so cool. Barred spirals have always just looked the coolest to me. This is like going to sleep in a normal house and waking up to discover yourself living in a castle! (Granted, out on the outer ramparts, but hey.)
